Buenos Aires, January 3 (NA) -- Alfredo Davicce, the historic president of River Plate from 1989 to 1997, passed away at the age of 96, leaving fans with great memories of the achievements accomplished during the 90s. Davicce led the institution for eight years from the late 80s to the late 90s and starred in one of the most successful management periods in the club's history, both on a sporting and institutional level. During his two terms, River won nine titles: seven local tournaments and two international ones. Domestically, he won the 1989/90 Primera División, the Apertura 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997, and the Clausura 1997. Internationally, his presidency was marked by the 1996 Copa Libertadores and the 1997 Supercopa Sudamericana, and until the Rodolfo D'Onofrio era, Davicce was the club's most winning president. Beyond the titles, his management was distinguished by a paradigm shift in squad building, with a strong bet on the youth divisions and an efficient transfer market. Under his leadership, players like Hernán Crespo, Ariel Ortega, Marcelo Gallardo, and Matías Almeyda debuted and consolidated, while key signings such as Juan Pablo Sorín, Enzo Francescoli, Germán Burgos, Eduardo Berizzo, and the Ayala brothers were also completed. The youth policy had a turning point with the arrival of Delem and a generation that marked an era. Davicce was also the leader who supported and projected coaches who would later become legends of the club, such as Daniel Passarella and Ramón Díaz. After leaving the presidency in 1997, he served as vice president during David Pintado's term until 2001, a period in which River added two more local titles. Although he did not actively participate in the club's politics in recent years, he was a figure of reference and respect for subsequent managements. In 2021, he participated in an institutional event at the Monumental along with Hugo Santilli and Rodolfo D'Onofrio, the other Copa Libertadores champion presidents in Núñez.
